ALTERED BOOK ASSIGNMENT :)

Objective: To create an altered book that represents a theme encompassing all that one word can represent.  You will creatively incorporate your own photos and add/subtract from your altered book to aid in demonstrating your theme.

Altered book
an altered book is a type of artist’s book where an existing book is transforming in some way to create a new work. A bound book is utilized as the surface to create art by various means, including, but not limited to, collaging, painting, rubber stamping, tearing, folding, burning, cutting, sewing, drawing and coloring. An altered book is another format to showcase art.

How do you begin?

1. You need a theme!
You may choose from one of the following words or choose your own to serve as the theme for your photos and the way you compose your book.  The word has to be a noun or adjective. No student may have the same word!

Words
Hero                  evil                   superstitious             pair                suspended               pair

6. Physically map out your book before altering your book.  What pages will be glued together? What will go on each page? Where will photos go? What colors/alterations will go on each? Will I make cut-outs or burn edges anywhere? Does every page connect with my theme word?

Final Project Guidelines

What to start brainstorming about...

  1. Your project can expand upon a project that we have done previously in the semester.
  2. Your project should reveal your unique view of the world. It should be a set of images that you are passionate about so that you are invested in the process and outcome. How is this project “yours” and only “yours”? Why would no one else in the world be able to make this project?
  3. Your project should be meaningful, with conceptual depth and complexity. Ask yourself whether it needs more “layers” of complexity, both visually and conceptually.
  4. Your project should exhibit your technical competency.
  5. Your project should push beyond the boundaries of what you have done so far this semester. Instead of merely replicating techniques or ideas of others, your project should bring your own creative perspective to the table.
  6. Think big! Edit later. Start like an adventurer and dreamer.
  7. Your project should be cohesive so that the images relate to one another in some important, meaningful way.

  • This assignment will involve brainstorming and research before diving in to make sure you are planned to take your photos. I will need to see your ideas/brainstorm before you check out camera
  • You must sign up to check out a camera.  You may sign up for up to two nights.  However, if you don't get your shoot done or check out the camera on the day you signed up for, you will lose your slot and can not sign up again.
  • I should not be able to tell your photos were taken at RHS

Tentative Critique: May 12, 13
You may share on your blog or print series
There will be a written section included

How do you know there are abstract? Your viewer should look at the photo and say, what is it? Close ups, focus on elements of design
Examples:

NEXT STEPS
The objective is to create a final unique composition composed of 6 of your best abstract images (from the 100 you took).  These images should work together to make a unified, interesting final art work.
1. With your abstract photos…
Narrow your 100 down to 20ish of your best photos to work with
Look for your most interesting and successful abstract photos, or similarities in the photos.  Could lines from one lead into another? Is there a dominant color you would like in your final?  Do you like the contrast in texture/ color/ shapes in certain photos?

2.  Create 3 draft compositions- 6 photos each (these can be the same or different)
Document size: 13x19 inches (File>New 13x19)
Incorporate the images (file>place)
–Hold the shift button while resizing.  After placed, if you need to resize the image again hit > ctrl >t.
-If you need to crop image, use rectangular marquee tool, quick selection tool, or polygonal lasso tool! Then copy and paste.
-Before asking for help, make sure you are on the correct layer!
-For better blending, refine edge (you will need to copy and paste to make adjustment) .
When photos are placed in doc., move photos around, overlap
Adjustments to consider: hue, size, replicate, smudge, adjustments tool, refine edge, filter (no more than 15%) to INDIVIDUAL photos

3. After you have placed and made Photoshop adjustments to individual photos and everything is how you want it, you will flatten the image.  After flattening the image, you can make overall adjustments to the overall photo (smudge, color, exposure, etc).
4. Choose the best out of your 3 drafts, check with me, and print your best composition.

Requirements
-13 x 19 inches
-The viewer can't tell there are 6 photos merged together-you have blended and warped and placed the photos strategically so the photos work together
-No white space showing
-You have evidence of: Rule of thirds, juxtaposition (contrast), a point of interest (focal point), rhythm, and unity
-It is unique, creative, and thoughtful
-Photos used are abstract
-3 drafts total
-The image is flattened, saved a s a .jpg, and printed (if fee has been paid)

Shutter Speed assignment

slow shutter speed example photo      fast shutter speed example photo
using a fast shutter speed to freeze motion of falling matches

We have practiced slow and fast shutter speed, and have seen many effects we can achieve through slowing it down and speeding it up.

You must INDEPENDENTLY come up with your own unique creative way to demonstrate your knowledge of shutter speed and how it can alter the concept and ways your image is viewed.

Ideas and more knowledge:
http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/camera-shutter-speed.htm

Objective: To demonstrate knowledge of shutter speed and the effects it can have on the portrayal of subjects in images.

It is required that you have five final photos displaying slow or fast shutter speed effects creatively.  Be original and choose one theme to shoot.  Are you portraying movement? Trying to freeze time? Is there a concept that your shutter speed setting will help convey?

Example: My theme is a tea party.  I will show fake china falling into place on a table and capture the tea being poured into a tea cup.

Project Requirements
  • Be able to explain shutter speed used
  • Perfect exposure with no blur or intentional blur
  • Positioning of subjects, lighting, background, angle, zoom is planned and executed
  • There is a clear theme to five final photos
  • Edited in Photoshop and five final images posted to blog with written statement
Theme expansion:
Conveying motion/movement
powder, fire, dropping items
Moving with the subject and panning
People falling, illusion
Color
Progression of blur

Due: Friday 6th/Monday 9th
