ALTERED BOOK ASSIGNMENT :)
Objective: To create an altered book that represents a
theme encompassing all that one word can represent. You will creatively
incorporate your own photos and add/subtract from your altered book to aid in demonstrating
your theme.
Altered book: an altered book is a type of artist’s book where an existing book is transforming in some way to create a new work. A bound book is utilized as the surface to create art by various means, including, but not limited to, collaging, painting, rubber stamping, tearing, folding, burning, cutting, sewing, drawing and coloring. An altered book is another format to showcase art.
How do you begin?
1. You need a theme!
You may choose from one of the following words or choose your own to serve as the theme for your photos and the way you compose your book. The word has to be a noun or adjective. No student may have the same word!
Words
Hero evil superstitious pair suspended pair
blue abandon contrast insect break dirty
water alone dog small technology sublime
contrast accident regret love bravery time
circle fantasy spicy falling fantasy path
peace protect water safe future nightmare
fear single alone childhood light fast food
grow progression window movie cut humor
express place diversity equality transform labeled
identity subconscious beautiful grotesque nature slimy
two faced hybrid line exposed paranoid wet

·
What does your word mean? What research did you find? What

mean to you? Did it mean something different in different context or different
time periods?
·
20 photos you will take
·
20 alterations
·

6. Physically map out your book before altering your book. What pages will be glued together? What will
go on each page? Where will photos go? What colors/alterations will go on each?
Will I make cut-outs or burn edges anywhere? Does every page connect with my
theme word?
7. Start altering and adding

Final Project Guidelines
What to start brainstorming about...
- Your project can expand upon a project that we have done previously in the semester.
- Your project should reveal your unique view of the world. It should be a set of images that you are passionate about so that you are invested in the process and outcome. How is this project “yours” and only “yours”? Why would no one else in the world be able to make this project?
- Your project should be meaningful, with conceptual depth and complexity. Ask yourself whether it needs more “layers” of complexity, both visually and conceptually.
- Your project should exhibit your technical competency.
- Your project should push beyond the boundaries of what you have done so far this semester. Instead of merely replicating techniques or ideas of others, your project should bring your own creative perspective to the table.
- Think big! Edit later. Start like an adventurer and dreamer.
- Your project should be cohesive so that the images relate to one another in some important, meaningful way.
- This assignment will involve brainstorming and research before diving in to make sure you are planned to take your photos. I will need to see your ideas/brainstorm before you check out camera
- You must sign up to check out a camera. You may sign up for up to two nights. However, if you don't get your shoot done or check out the camera on the day you signed up for, you will lose your slot and can not sign up again.
- I should not be able to tell your photos were taken at RHS
Tentative Critique: May 12, 13
